This beautiful Edinburgh wedding took place at The Caledonian Edinburgh, the landmark Princes Street hotel formerly known as Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian.

It was one of those wonderfully unpredictable Scottish days when the weather became part of the story. We had grey skies and a little rain, but rather than working against us, it gave the photographs a completely different atmosphere. The wedding itself was a joyful celebration bringing two families together, with plenty of laughter, emotion and lovely moments happening throughout the day.

When the rain eased, we left The Caledonian for a little while and headed towards Arthur's Seat and Holyrood Park for the couple portraits. We stayed around the lower part of Arthur's Seat rather than climbing to the top. With mist hanging over the hills, the landscape looked beautiful — quiet, soft and very different from the grand city-centre surroundings of The Caledonian.

I love that contrast. In a relatively short distance you can go from one of Edinburgh's historic hotels to open grass, hills and rocky landscapes that barely feel as though they are in the middle of a city. We kept the portraits relaxed, walking around the lower slopes and making the most of the changing weather and mist. Sometimes the days without perfect blue skies give you the most interesting photographs. Back at The Caledonian, I continued photographing the celebration as it unfolded — the people, conversations, laughter and all the smaller moments happening between family and friends.

The hotel has been part of Edinburgh since the beginning of the 20th century and remains one of the city's most recognisable buildings. Today it is The Caledonian Edinburgh, Curio Collection by Hilton, although many couples will still remember it as the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian. For me, this wedding was a lovely example of how much variety Edinburgh can give you in a single day: an elegant city-centre celebration at The Caledonian combined with atmospheric portraits among the hills of Holyrood Park.
