Calton Hill is one of the most recognisable places in Edinburgh and somewhere I’ve photographed couples many times over the years. It works especially well for couple sessions, engagements, proposals and portraits after a wedding ceremony because you get wide views over the city without having to travel far from the centre.

From the hill you can see towards Arthur’s Seat, the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle, and there is a mixture of open grass, stone paths and historic monuments. Every session looks a little different depending on the light, weather and time of year.

Calton Hill is an open outdoor location rather than a controlled studio setting, so there may be a bit of wind and your hair may move around — but that is all part of the natural, relaxed feel of a session there. Comfortable shoes are also a good idea because there is some uphill walking.

What I like most about Calton Hill is that the setting gives us plenty of space, but the photographs can still feel relaxed and personal. The scenery is there, but the couple should always be the most important part of the photographs.

If you’re planning a couple photo session in Edinburgh, Calton Hill can work beautifully on its own, or as part of a longer session combined with the Old Town.
