Overhailes Farm is tucked away in the beautiful East Lothian countryside, not far from Haddington, the River Tyne and historic Hailes Castle. It was a wonderfully peaceful setting for this relaxed winter wedding, surrounded by fields and open countryside. One of the things I love about photographing weddings in East Lothian is the variety. There are beautiful country houses and castles, barns, farms and small private venues, often surrounded by some of the loveliest landscapes in Scotland. This wedding had a completely different feeling from a celebration in the middle of Edinburgh. Family and friends gathered at the farm, with the reception taking place in a warm marquee while it was decidedly more Scottish outside!

A relaxed wedding in East Lothian

It was a cool autumn day, but we were lucky enough to have some beautiful light and a lovely sunset towards the end of the afternoon.The countryside around Over Hailes gave the whole celebration a peaceful, rural atmosphere. Away from busy streets and city traffic, it almost felt like everyone had escaped somewhere for the weekend. Inside the marquee, however, there was plenty going on. Guests arriving and greeting each other, conversations, laughter, music from the band and all the energy that comes when family and friends have gathered together to celebrate. Those are always the things I enjoy photographing most. Rather than directing everything that happens, I like to observe the wedding as it unfolds and photograph the relationships and little moments happening throughout the day. Alongside those documentary photographs, we made time for some relaxed portraits of the couple, making the most of the countryside and winter light around the farm. Every wedding has its own atmosphere, and this one felt particularly warm and intimate despite the cold outside.
