Some weddings feel like a true adventure, and this was certainly one of them. How often do you attend a wedding where guests board a boat to reach the ceremony venue? The day began in South Queensferry, one of Scotland's most picturesque coastal towns, famous for its waterfront setting and spectacular views of the iconic Forth Rail Bridge. While the bride prepared for the day at her parents' home, the groom and his guests gathered at the historic Hawes Inn before boarding a boat for the journey across the Firth of Forth.
Their destination was Inchcolm Island, home to the remarkable Inchcolm Abbey. Situated in the middle of the Firth of Forth, the island feels wonderfully removed from the busy world and provides a truly unique setting for a wedding ceremony. Arriving by boat only adds to the sense of occasion and makes the experience unforgettable for both the couple and their guests.
Inchcolm Abbey is one of Scotland's most distinctive wedding venues. Surrounded by sea views and centuries of history, it offers endless opportunities for beautiful and atmospheric wedding photography. The combination of medieval architecture, coastal scenery, and island setting creates a backdrop unlike anywhere else in Scotland.
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed time exploring the abbey and the island before returning by boat to South Queensferry. The celebrations continued at Orocco Pier, a popular waterfront wedding venue overlooking the Firth of Forth and the famous Forth bridges. The relaxed atmosphere, stunning views, and coastal setting made it the perfect location to continue the festivities.
One of the highlights of the evening was a surprise video prepared by the couple's friends. The room was filled with laughter, and it was wonderful to capture the genuine reactions, smiles, and emotions that unfolded throughout the screening. As a documentary wedding photographer, these unscripted moments are some of my favourites. While beautiful venues and stunning landscapes provide incredible backdrops, it is the laughter, tears, friendships, and connections between people that truly tell the story of a wedding day. Years later, these photographs allow couples to relive not only the events of the day but also the emotions that made it so special.
Below are some of my favourite photographs from this unforgettable Inchcolm Island wedding and Orocco Pier celebration.
However, South Queensferry is not only a wonderful location for weddings but also for engagement and couple photography. With the iconic Forth Bridges, waterfront views, and historic streets, it provides a beautiful backdrop for relaxed portraits.
